Who has had a brush with Covid-19?

I haven't and none of my nearest and dearest have thankfully but I know 3 people (not so nearest and dearest) who have.

In the UK we've just entered another sort of lockdown for a further 6 weeks as we've been developing our own strains of the virus which seem to be adding to the problem.

Two people I know, 1 got it in Feb and 1 in March and they both still get ill, mostly breathing problems and no energy and they're relatively young with no conditions. The 3rd person was only diagnosed just this Sunday and he was due round my house on that day, emailed and said he couldn't make it because he's got it. Close call.

Anyone have any personal experience with this or had the vaccine yet?

I've had a family member die from Covid-19, a family friend die from it, and 3 family members hospitalized from it. I've just been hunkering down and avoiding people the best I can and only making essential trips to the pharmacy and grocery store.

The two who died had underlying health conditions but the hospitalized were young relatively healthy people. I'm upset that people are still disregarding the mask mandate and no large gatherings.

I myself haven't had it yet. Nor have i been vaccinated yet. Two family members for sure have had it prior to July. There was an outbreak at work in our main office on the 8th floor, an employee came to work who was positive and had been having symptoms for over a week's time. The entire floor was sent home and instructed to be tested and quarantine. Those of us who work up on the higher floors in the building or who were not in at the time were the only ones doing any data processing.

A good friend of mine and his girl friend both had it recently, he did not have a really bad case, she did.

As to the newer strain of the virus, it's already here in the U.S. , and very likely in northern Illinois as of news reports today.

Yeah my brother got it early last year. I've noticed that it definitely can make people more difficult to deal with.

I've avoided it so far and I've only one friend who had a mild case sometime around Thanksgiving.

A few of my friends are essential workers and have been vaccinated. I'm just a "general populace" schlub though so I have no idea how long I'll have to wait.

My parents got their positive test results on Christmas which was very fun(not). They got a relatively mild case luckily, they're recovering in isolation now.

So a lot of people have people close to them that have had it. I'm surprised really, I thought it would be hardly anyone.

We've got a shipment of vaccine in our area but I'm a long way down the list and now our govt is doing two doses 12 weeks apart instead of 4 so additional 2 months waiting to be fully vaccinated!

I'm beginning to forget what real life feels like.

I can not wait to go out for a meal. I think that's the thing I miss the most. I'm a lazy shitty cook and I'm sick of my efforts.

I haven't been out on a nice date with my husband in a little over a year. We try to have nice date nights here at home but I miss going out and not having to do dishes, lol.

WELL.... Firstly, it's been relatives of friends. Quite a few friends have said, "My relative has it." I only know about one death from friends/acquaintances. It was his mom. Poor guy.

Secondly, AFAIK, I have not had it. I haven't been tested nor have I been vaccinated. I don't think I'm high on the priority list in my state (CA), even though I'm an "essential worker" (I work at a major chain clothing retail store but I'm now considered essential because we sell face masks, sanitizer, and wipes). On Sunday, I was told privately and secretly by a manager I'm cool with that 3 people I work with have been exposed. The night before I had worked with the GM and the GM said nothing. In fact, NO ONE has said anything to us. I asked her if management was going to tell us about this and she said she didn't think so because it was considered confidential by the company. So, even though we all interact with customers all day and half of them don't wear masks properly, we have people on our team who have been exposed and we aren't even allowed to know about it because it's confidential? I don't need to know who, but goddamnit, if members I have worked with have been exposed, I feel like we all should know about it, especially when many of them hang out with each other outside of work. So, I may put in a leave or a 2 week notice soon because of this. I already felt not important and replaceable at my job but now I REALLY feel that way, Thanks, Gap Inc.

I found out late that night, early Monday morning my brother has it. He says he's sore but other than that, he's okay. He thinks he got it from work; he also works at a major clothing chain retail store (not the same one I work at).

My great aunt had it and was hospitalized. She's in her 80s. Thankfully she made it through, but we can all tell she's got lingering effects from it. Another close relative works in an ambulance, so...yeah.....

Last week we were informed by our neighbor that someone who had been staying with her had tested positive.

And just the other day we got word of another relative who died from it. Happened really fast too. He was fine with no symptoms the day before.

As for myself, I live with two high risk individuals and I can't honestly say I'm in the best shape either, but out of all of us I'm the one who's in the best condition to do the shopping, so I go out every so often to buy a month and a half worth of food in order to limit exposure as much as possible. I was unemployed when this thing started and after it did, I pretty much just abandoned even trying to look for employment. I know I'm far from the only one in that boat, but I also know that there are people far worse off than me. I was just lucky enough to be living with someone who can do their job online, so we do have income.

By the way, the local hospitals are at capacity and are triaging patients. This thing is no joke and definitely not a hoax by any means.

There is one thing that's been on my mind from time to time this past year though. There's been some reports that Covid was actually in the U.S. as early as November, and I did get horrendously ill last December. First with a nasty cold, and then a week later with the flu. Not as bad as the one that had me literally on the bathroom floor for a day, but still pretty bad. But if those reports are true, then I suppose there's a very remote possibility that I've already had it.

You know, my best friend says that about her great grandmother. She was healthy for most of November then got really really sick suddenly. The docs called it pneumonia and it seemed like she was getting better but then died all of a sudden in Dec. 2019.

A local carpenter had to close his shop recently because of Covid among his employees.

One of my nephews was in quarantine in late October because one of his classmates had Covid.

My mother is 81 years old, so she's in the priority 1 group for a vaccination (which has started last Sunday). I will do all shopping etc. for her and she will gather with a selected few friends, one at a time, until she's through with that.

I myself stay at home all the time, except for shopping once a week. I missed the last opportunity for a haircut. My hair looks like Beethoven's now, that's a good excuse for ending the year of his 250th birthday.

My hair is so long and because it's thick it's hurting my neck, lol! I am getting closer to buying shears and having Z cut my hair off.

EDIT: to anyone reading this and has had COVID affect their lives or their friends', I'm so sorry and hope things get better for you and them, whether it's thru peace or getting healthy again. 💜 I hope everyone is okay.

I have a flobee. Not the same as a barber shop or a hair stylist, obviously, but it does make it easy to keep my hair from imitating Giorgio.

Yeah I heard a lot of people in the US had a really bad flu in late 2019, they all thought they got Covid. Dunno if any of them got tested for antibodies though(to confirm they got it)

The influenca cases have dropped here a lot because of the Covid measures. I don't think I got even a slight cold in the last two years (yes, I know that a cold is not the flu).

BTW, I heard that if you get a flu vaccination, a Covid test will yield a positive result. That's just second hand knowledge though. So if you are tested for Covid after a flu vaccination, make sure that you tell them, in case they don't ask.

That's at least one positive to come out of this mess. People have become a lot more aware of how diseases spread, if only superficially, and are taking steps that frankly everyone should have been doing even if there wasn't a pandemic. If you've got a fever and cough, stay home. Don't be a hero and show up to the office so you can share it with everyone else. Same goes for holidays. The flu makes a really crappy Christmas gift. Your family will understand if you want to delay opening your presents a few days.

Employers might also wanna rethink their sick day and work from home policies a bit. Granted a good chunk of that is on the employees. Particularly the young ones who are notorious for calling in sick because the new XBox came out or they wanted to go to the theater or something along those lines. I even got a lecture on the subject at one of my previous jobs shortly after I was hired because apparently months prior to my working there, the whole department had called in sick on the day one of the Halo games released.

In all honesty though, I doubt this newfound awareness is going to last very long once there's a decent saturation of the vaccine having been administered.

I'm one of those who believe I might have had it late in December 2019 but have not gone through testing to verify that belief. I didn't have it in early December 2020, for certain, having twice been through the "Q-Tip Lobotomy" required by Governor Andrew "The Prince of Darkness" Cuomo.
So a lot of people have people close to them that have had it. I'm surprised really, I thought it would be hardly anyone.
Our CIO in all probability died from it; he was an ex-Army Ranger but had underlying respiratory issues. More recently, our Safety Manager, also ex-Army Infantry, had it & sounded quite bad when one of my contractors had called him.

Obviously not, but at the same time, much of the media emphasis has been on efficacy (it's really not very 'deadly', certainly not more so than 2017's influenza/pneumonia season, plus there's hundreds of examples of America "juicing" the casualty numbers) and far too little on transmissibility (dang stuff spreads like wildfire, which is likely why the ChiComs were playing with it).

And no, I'm not one of the tinfoil hat types who believe it was a deliberate release; I'm familiar enough with the farce of what Chinese consider quality control to make that assumption. They just decided to make the best of an embarrassing situation by helping it spread world-wide.
